Map Skills Intermediate | Grids, Longitude & Latitude, Types of Maps | Boom Deck (2024)

Advancing the understanding and use of maps means hands-on work with visuals and structured practice. It requires different reading skills, in addition to text reading. Even with today’s technology, the reading of maps is essential, and these slides make teaching or practicing a breeze while engaging intermediate learners.

:

8 informational slides (which makes them great for teaching)

8 slides on applying the reading of intermediate directions with various maps, 3 slides on reading map keys or legends

6 slides to apply kinds of maps to use

3 slides applying Mimal or Mr. Baker Man

5 slides applying map scale

5 slides using grid reading

6 slides applying longitude and latitude

Assign all or parts for differentiation. The maps were created with student interests in mind. If using a projecting device, these make great introductory lessons or supplements to your curriculum. The click-to-respond and drag-and-drop responses are easy, and the self-checking makes teacher work a breeze.

What are BOOM Cards?

Boom Cards are interactive digital task cards that are self-grading. They live in the cloud and are hosted on the Boom Learning platform. A group of slides is often referred to as a slide deck. Teachers can build their Boom Library by creating their own decks or purchasing individual digital activities that have been created for them. Teachers can then assign the tasks by logging into the Boom Learning website.

Decks play on most modern browsers, Android, iPads, iPhones, and Kindle Fires. Not sure your browser is modern enough? Try a free Boom Cards deck first.

How to Get Started with Boom Cards

To get started with Boom Cards, you will first need to create a Boom Learning Account. There are several different membership levels, ranging from a free account to a Boom Plus account. So, choose the boom account that works best for you. You can always upgrade or downgrade your Boom Learning membership at any time.

Free Account:The free version allows for a fast play link or fast pin link with up to 5 students. You can start by opening a free trial and playing around in the Boom app. Please check on current options in the link for details. Read here for details: http://bit.ly/BoomTrial

Essential Account and Premium Account:(These are the types of accounts most teachers will want for their classroom.) Both paid version accounts are very affordable and gather data on individual student success. For a small fee, you will be able to review student performance on different skills individually.

Different Ways to Use Boom Cards

***Did you know???You can assign Boom Cards in Google Classroom™ and more!

There are so many ways to assign Boom Cards in your classroom. They even work in Seesaw, Schoology, Canvas, Google Classroom, and more! JustCLICK HERE to find out how!

How Many Devices Can Access These:

A single license is good for one teacher and her students, so you can use this with your whole class on as many devices as you like. You can even assign these for homework, too!

How Will I Assign the Files?

You will be able to assign the Boom Cards you are buying with "Fast Pins," (play provides instant feedback for self-grading Boom Cards). Fast Play is always a free way for students to engage with Boom Cards decks. I will provide the link to access Boom Learning in the resource. In other words, you can use these with a free account, but you get the additional features with the premium account. Premium accounts are very low cost for the year, too.

If you want more detailed reports, you will want to use the hyperplay links. If you use a learning management system to assign decks such as Google Classroom, Schoology, Moodle, Blackboard, PowerSchool, Canvas, or Seesaw, you will most likely want to use Fast Pins or HyperPlay. Learn more by clickingHERE.

You will find supportive articles on the Boom Website to help you with technical support.

Why Will You Love Boom Cards?

Easy to differentiate- You can assign different decks to individual students. Some students may complete an activity in January, while others might be ready for that skill later in the school year. You can, also, assign or hide slides from students to shorten or modify assignments.

Immediate Feedback- They are fabulous when it’s come to interactivity. Students will receive instant feedback if they have made an error. Then, they are given an opportunity to correct the mistake…not reinforce it. This provides student accountability while working independently, which makes the activities much more effective!

Interactive Activities- Each Boom deck is unique, so read the specific boom deck description to see the different features each deck has. However, generally, students can drag and drop their responses, click on the correct answer, or even type their responses. New features continue to be added, too; and you’ll have no worries about accidentally resizing pieces like in Google Classroom activities.

Saves time- For a very reasonable price, you can get a paid account that tracks student progress. The cards are automatically graded, and you can see how each student did on every slide in the deck. This will save you SO much time as you gather student data.
